A funny thing happened while we were attending my wife's sister's funeral last week. Dot's pastor is Rev. Gail Davidson of the United Parish in Celebration, Florida, where Dot lived. Of course, she was asked to participate in the service. But the main funeral message was given by Dot's brother, Rev. John Patterson, who is minister of senior adults in a large Baptist church in Jackson, Mississippi. Most of Dot's family is Baptist, and there were four Baptist ministers present from the immediate family.
So there was a problem when Dot's female minister showed up. Actually, there were two problems since one of the sisters-in-law was named "Gail" and the minister was "Gail." How were we to distinguish the two? And the Baptists there hardly knew what to do with a female minister. So the family came upon the creative solution of calling Dot's female minister "Brother Gail." Rev. Davidson was such a good sport that she wore the name proudly.
